Life insurance pays a lump sum of your choosing on the event of death or diagnosis of a terminal illness.

Policies can cover a specified period of time (the ‘term’), for example 20 years, to match your mortgage or when the children are dependent. When these things happen your earnings stop (sick pay etc is always limited and non-existent for self-employed, Statutory sick pay is less than £100 per week) the monthly payment helps pay towards your mortgage, rent, bills and lifestyle, protecting any savings, credit score and debts.
